The Reading Institute develops and scales high-impact tutoring/ reading intervention programs and professional learning that prepares educators, tutors and caregivers to effectively support striving readers.
We are a nonprofit organization translating literacy research into practical tools, programs, and training that prepare educators and strengthen classrooms. Endorsed by university professors and reviewed continuously for alignment with research, our model helps schools and partners deliver what works, so more children become confident readers.

Across the country, far too many children are missing the foundations of reading. At the same time, thousands of teachers-in-training spend their required fieldwork hours on passive observation with little practical value. Our approach connects the two: it turns those practice hours into intensive literacy intervention, and turns that intervention into hands-on teacher preparation.
The Reading Institute was founded in 2023 by Katie Pace Miles, Ph.D., a renowned expert in the science of reading. Dr. Miles founded the non-profit to expand the impact of the Bentzen Silverman Foundation (BSF), which has been committed to elementary literacy in New York City public schools for over thirty years. The Reading Institute is founded on the conviction that literacy research only matters if it reaches the children who need it.
