Preparing Educators to Teach Reading

We embed evidence-based literacy tutoring into university courses for teacher training. Future teachers get hands-on experience with research-based reading programs, and striving readers get an intensive, proven intervention.

Why Now

Across the country, far too many children are not getting adequate literacy instruction. In 2024, only 31% of fourth graders read at or above the NAEP Proficient level, lower than before the pandemic. At the same time, thousands of teachers-in-training spend required fieldwork hours in passive observation, with little practical value. With more than 40 states now requiring the science of reading in classrooms, we are helping our partners address both challenges.

For Universities We give professors and teacher-prep programs a practical, scalable answer that strengthens fieldwork and delivers an effective literacy intervention to the students who need it most.

How Our Work Reaches Students

Universities (the University Tutoring Collaborative, UTC)

Professors adopt our proven high-impact tutoring model in their teacher-preparation courses, requiring their students to complete our training and work with a striving reader for their fieldwork hours.

Schools & Districts

Educators, including paraprofessionals, deliver our high-impact tutoring model to striving readers before, during, or after school. Community organizations also partner with us, creating an ecosystem of support for striving readers.

University Tutoring Collaborative (UTC)

Our university tutoring model provides training and evidence-based literacy programs to improve fieldwork experiences. Future teachers learn to teach reading through hands-on experience, and striving readers get intensive support.

Step 1

Train

The Reading Institute partners with professors to embed our training and evidence-based programs into their coursework.

Step 2

Match

After training, professors work with their local school partners to match their university students with striving readers who need one-on-one, high-impact tutoring.

Step 3

Tutor

University students provide high-impact tutoring and gain real-world experience teaching reading. Striving readers improve their foundational literacy skills.

School and District Partnerships

We provide training and evidence-based literacy programs to our school and district partners. Trained educators, paraeducators, and other school-based staff use our programs in intervention and tutoring settings to support striving readers.

Step 1

Train

We partner directly with schools to provide training, access to programs, and technical assistance.

Step 2

Match

With our guidance, schools use their assessment data to match striving readers with trained educators.

Step 3

Tutor

Trained school-based staff provide high-dosage tutoring and intervention using our programs. Striving readers improve their foundational literacy skills.
