Science of Reading Microcredential Showcased to National Leaders: Download PDF

On March 11, The Reading Institute’s 10-hour Science of Reading Intro Course was featured during a National Governors Association visit to PS 189 in Manhattan. Governors Jared Polis (CO), Dan McKee (RI), and representatives from Governor Kathy Hochul’s office observed NYC educators putting the course’s research-based strategies into action.

The visit highlighted TRI’s support of New York’s Back to Basics reading plan. Following the classroom visit, Dr. Katie Pace Miles, Founder and President of The Reading Institute and Associate Professor at Brooklyn College, Dr. Ashleigh Thompson, Dean for Education at the City University of New York (CUNY) and educators from PS 189 participated in a discussion on how the course bridges research and practice. This year,  2,500 NYC educators and CUNY students will access the course for free—thanks to The Reading Institute's partnership with NYCPS, CUNY and The Heckscher Foundation for Children.

Featured Program: Science of Reading 10-Hour Intro Course

TTRI’s Science of Reading 10-Hour Intro Course is a dynamic, self-paced micro course designed to help educators learn and apply evidence-based reading practices in the classroom. The micro features ten engaging modules with video instruction, authentic classroom demos, interactive checks for understanding, and downloadable resources. Topics include structured literacy, phonological awareness, orthographic mapping, comprehension, vocabulary, and literacy and neurodivergence.

The course was developed in partnership with Brooklyn College, CUNY, NYC Public Schools, and supported by the Heckscher Foundation for Children and the Benedict Silverman Foundation.

With foundation support, the course is FREE for NYC Public School educators and CUNY students and just $25 for the general public.

Supporting Future Educators—and Future Readers

We are pleased to highlight - Canisius University - one of The Reading Institute’s 25 University Tutoring Collaborative partners. The Reading Ready Early Literacy Tutoring Program at Canisius University connects future educators with K–2 students in Buffalo, NY for high-dosage, one-on-one tutoring. Canisius students gain hands-on teaching experience, while young learners take their first steps toward fluent reading.

The program has a fundraising goal of $3,380 to help them launch a summer tutoring initiative, covering tutor training, compensation, and a celebration for participants. With 88% of their goal raised , every contribution will help. Donate here.

TRI at the 2025 Everyone Reading Conference on Dyslexia and Related Learning Disabilities

The Reading Institute was proud to take part in the 2025 Everyone Reading Conference on Dyslexia and Related Learning Disabilities at the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Katie Pace Miles gave a compelling talk on evidence-based reading intervention strategies, sparking meaningful dialogue around practical tools for literacy instruction. TRI hosted a table at the conference and connected with incredible educators, researchers, and clinicians committed to advancing literacy. It was great to connect and reconnect with so many amazing educators. We’re looking forward to next year!
